Laundry Day

Today was laundry day at my house. I really enjoy doing laundry, which may seem strange, but I love the smell of fresh, clean clothes folded in the basket.

I collect aprons, so it seemed natural to me to use my laundry room as a place to display some of my favorites, along with other vintage items that fit the theme. You know that I love bright colors, and this room is a testament to that.

Of course what you see isn't the true picture! The ironing board is usually piled high with clean clothes that need to be folded, and the dirty clothes are out of sight on the floor.

If you're like me and enjoy doing laundry, you might also enjoy reading Irene Rawlings and Andrea Vansteenhouse's book The Clothesline. It's full of cute pictures, vintage items, laundry room ideas and the history of laundry. I took this book out of the library so many times, and finally found a copy at a half-price bookstore. Now I can look at it any time I want.

To me laundry isn't a chore, but a satisfying ritual that brings a sense of calm to my day. And though I do laundry on Saturday, instead of Monday, like our grandmothers and great-grandmothers did, our routines are much the same. My washer is much easier to use, and I'm glad for that, but I'm ready to go back to the clothesline. No bottle of fabric softener can recreate the sweet smell of fresh air and sunshine.

Betsy, laundry is the one chore I always enjoyed..I can remember when the kids were teenagers and the Saturday Wash Day...It took all day...but there's something about clean clothes and fresh folded linens.

I'm so jealous....you have the cutest things :)

You've inspired me to spruce mine up a bit....maybe it'll help since laundry is my least favorite chore. ;)

thanks for sharing!

THIS IS JUST THE CUTEST LAUNDRY ROOM i'VE SEEN! All the aprons are so sweet. I too love hanging my clothes out on the line-there is nothing like laying your head upon a pillowcase that's been sundried!

What a cheerful laundry room. I love doing laundry too, and love sunny days when I can hang clothes out on the clothes racks.

You have such a lovely collection of aprons! I like how you have displayed them in your laundry room, what a great idea. If I had a laundry room like that, I wouldn't mind at all spending my time in there doing the laundry.
I agree that nothing beats hanging out the clothes to dry on a sunny day. Over here we seem to get more rain then sun though :P

Thanks everyone for your comments! Decorating my laundry room was fun and inexpensive since it's small and I already had most of what's hanging up in there. I love seeing what other people do with their laundry rooms too. I didn't make the ironing board cover, although I've seen places that have patterns to do this. I found it at Target years ago and have babied it along since it's red and matches my room. It has a couple of scorch spots, but it's still hanging in there!

Bless your heart! What a cheerful place to work! All yellow and red and full of light. I did a post on "Laundry Room Fun" not too long after I started my blog. I plan to do one on aprons maybe early next year after the holidays. You've given me a lot of inspiration! =D

Oh I adore your blog and your laundry room. Where have you been all my blog life? When I find another blogger who decorates vintage with bright colors I just love it. How cute is your room and that book. I have to find that. I have the same laundry 15 cents sign. My laundry room is often messy too. Something about that room.

There is nothing like the smell of line-dried clothes! Many have tried to copy that smell and failed!

When I was growing up my mother had a wringer washer. Without fail, we washed all day on Monday and ironed all day on Tuesday! We were a family of 8 so we had lots of laundry! Summertime wasn't so bad but we had to hang clothes out year round. Winter was no fun! Our clothes would freeze on the line and our fingers would freeze trying to get the clothes pins off!

I don't mind doing laundry but I am ever thankful for my new front loaders! :)

Speaking of laundry....lol

Hope,

Thanks for being such a loyal follower. Do you have an e-mail address? I have wanted to respond to your comments, but get the no-reply blogger message. I loved hearing your experiences with a clothesline. Much more fun in the summer than in the winter for sure!

Saw the aprons and had to check this post out. I collect aprons also. Love how you have them displayed. I have a few hanging in my sewing room. Others I rotate in my kitchen and back door entry. My kids think I'm crazy because I love to do laundry, dishes, and mow the lawn. It's all about the smell. Love the freshness! I'm hoping to attach a few aprons to my ironing board. Saw this idea at Mary Janes Farm Store in Idaho and loved it. Love all the varieties!

I truly loved seeing all your fun vintage things. Although I love aprons, I never really know how to display them to their best advantage. Yours are really cute, along with that clothes pin holder. I haven't seen one of those in ages, so that was a nice trip down memory lane!

The old aprons are pretty to look at. That is a neat idea to use them on your wall. Wonder why we hide so many things in drawers instead of putting them out so WE can enjoy treasures?

Hi, Betsy. I've decided to do an apron post tomorrow. My sister and I workded on it all day, ironing and photographing aprons. We used my daughter, Sascha as a model. I was wondering if it would be okay with you to feature your darling laundry room on the post? I just hope you see this before morning. Thanks so much for inspiring me. =D
